Seeing the game at Gamers' Day last week kind of caught me off guard. Naturally, I already knew about THQ's desire to grow its new license, once tried and dropped by EA, and I knew it would be on PS2, but there were several things that I hadn't yet discovered.

Namely, that the game wouldn't in most ways resemble anything that I had ever perceived before as a Hot Wheels game.But before I delve into that, let's get something straight, something that THQ and the folks at Hot Wheels think about all the time. Hot Wheels and its opponent brand, Match Box cars, are indeed different. When I think of Hot Wheels, I instantly think of Match Box cars, which is CERTAINLY anathema to both parties, but hey, it's not my fault I collected both when I was a kid, and that over the years they melded into one in my mind.Now, about Hot Wheels. Hot Wheels still in my mind reeks of some kids racing game, something that may have once been cool, but certainly isn't now. The whole concept of Hot Wheels racing in my mind smacks of those old plastic gold rails, the red tongues that connected them, pre-made vertical loops, funny cars, hot rods, and '70s sedans with jacked up rear ends, giant engines bulging from their hoods, with valves, smoke, and shining chrome glinting everywhere. If this game had pretty much in any way fit into that description, I was fully prepared to smile, check the 'I thought so' box in my head, and not like it.So, I learned a few things that have put my cynicisms in check, for now.

First, the folks who made Motor Mayhem, are developing Hot Wheels. Think what you want about Motor Mayhem (and I agree, it was a rather average car-combat game), but the game was stacked to the hilt graphically, bragging all sorts of great particle effects, and as a 3D engine goes, Motor Mayhem's was a very good one.Second, Beyond Games has imagined what it would be to make Hot Wheels cool again, and to break from the stodgy old perception that people like me have ingrained in their foggy old brains. For starters, I love a car that has a bitchen' (yes, bitchen') big, roaring engine sound, and these cars all sound powerfully jacked with horsepower and hopefully some kind of nitro boosts. Needless to say, the cars sound good.Visually, the three or four cars I saw do indeed look just like Hot Wheels cars, but they don't look kiddy, crappy, or stupid, they look like cars you'd want to drive. They're nicely detailed, sleek yet muscled in design, and there are dozens of them, each resembling the most exotic of sports car designs around. They look just like real exotic sports cars, the kind you always wished you could drive when you were a kid.Third, the game looks like it has potential, unlike the first PlayStation Hot Wheels game THQ developed late last year. Designed as a hybrid racer/action game, Hot Wheels has boasts stunts that look like they're from Rumble Racing, but plays a little like Spy Hunter and Rush, all based in a hero-based fantasy world of good guys versus bad guys.Players get to grips with this missions-based racer through six levels, and 30 missions.

Inspired by Speed Racer, Beyond Games admits that it's set up a good versus bad guy dynamic. When a criminal gang of racing hoodlums, led by a ferociously mean looking one-eyed kingpin overtakes the streets of Monument City, you must buckle up into a series of wild cars to meet objectives that one by one knock off the weaseley bad guys for good.The six major levels are constructed with classic Hot Wheels loops and jumps in mind, but they don't overpower the other qualities of the course design. Players will find that, for instance, the entire city of Monument City, is linked by out of the way monorail lines, or that it's filled with hidden tiers to jump to or secret paths to ferret out.Once in the drivers seat, the worlds are worth exploring on their own, and because of their size, there's a good deal of exploration and adventure to be had. Drivers will often find themselves driving up high on the shoulders of ramps, passing over loops that create a feeling of gravity pulling at your car as you pass the vertex before coming down, and jumping from one half pipe loop across to another. It was kind of neat to see how many times I could drive upside down.The controls seemed simple enough, consisting of the standard acceleration and brake buttons, an action button for attacks, an ebrake/slide button that also works as reverse when the car has reached a full stop.

Once in the air, players earn points by pulling off stunts, using the shoulder buttons in conjunction with L3 or the dpad to pull off summersaults, spins, and various thereof. The jump spots appear often and in large size, enabling massive lengths of air to earn points.To add to the action, Beyond Games is implementing a power-up system, replete with powerful weapons and health pick-ups which enable players to snag enemies and stay healthy long enough to complete a mission.

At this early stage, the powers weren't working all too well, but rest at ease, the game is due this fall, and we're sure it will turn toward the positive.Hot Wheels at this point looks like it has the potential to be a fun game. Certainly it has the graphic chops to attract those who love pretty games. It has great looking renditions of the classic Hot Wheels cars, and large, complex environments in which to drive them. The action and racing themselves require more time and development to comment on fairly. Certainly, the engine is ready, but this one still needs time to percolate. We'll have more on Beyond Games' intriguing action racer in the near future.Meanwhile, you might want to dust off your old car-carrying case and those old tracks just to give it a whirl, because this game probably won't be anything like what you've experienced before.-Douglass C.
